HUMAN BUZZ

Marie Odbjerg

"Human Buzz" is, as the title implies, an exploration of human interaction in public space, focusing on the buzzing atmosphere in cafes and restaurants. Through various sizes of paintings created mostly with acrylic paint, enhanced with oil pastels, the artist seeks to create a kind of "human interaction treasure hunt". What really happens, or happened, between the individuals in the different motifs, will vary depending on who the spectator is. And so the stories told become abundant.

The reason to focus on cafes and restaurants as a space for human interaction was to bring the tradition of Stilleben into another tradition of painting multiple portraits, but also to comment on the never ending need for human kind to be seen and to see others, as a kind of performance of life in general.

Marie Odbjerg

Marie Odbjerg’s practice explores the social dynamics of everyday life through figurative painting. Her works depict gatherings, encounters and shared spaces in which the individual is constantly negotiating their position within a larger social constellation. Drawing on a vivid, painterly language, Odbjerg combines expressive colour, spatial ambiguity and a heightened sense of gesture and bodily presence. Her compositions often operate at the intersection of observation and fiction, transforming seemingly ordinary situations into psychologically charged scenes. The crowd becomes a recurring motif: a space of connection, tension and possibility. Within these densely populated compositions, individual figures emerge and recede, creating a shifting interplay between intimacy and anonymity, presence and absence. Odbjerg’s paintings thus offer not merely representations of social life, but reflections on the human impulse to gather, belong and be seen.
